Pakistan's specialty-botanical tier

This is the most regulated and most origin-sensitive category in our catalog. Specialty botanicals are typically wild-harvested, supply-constrained, pharma-relevant or controlled, and the buyer profile is fundamentally different from spice and seed buyers. The dominant end-uses are traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, Greco-Arab Tibb, Halal cosmetics, ittar perfumery, regulated pharma extraction, natural dye for textile, and incense for traditional and religious use. Pakistan's structural advantages here are: (a) genuine wild-harvest origin for sea buckthorn (Gilgit-Baltistan), harmal (Balochistan), guggul (Sindh-Balochistan border), licorice (central and western Pakistan); (b) access to non-Chinese ephedra supply from KPK and Afghan border, into the regulated TCM-pharma channel; (c) frankincense processing and re-export sorting capacity for the GCC ittar trade; (d) Halal supply chain by national law for buyers feeding pharma into Halal-certified channels.

Origin transparency note: we declare exact origin per lot on the COA. Frankincense is largely re-export from Somali, Omani and Indian sources processed at our Hyderabad facility — we never claim native Pakistani frankincense. Ephedra origin (KPK, Balochistan, Afghan border) is verified per shipment. Sea buckthorn, harmal and licorice are genuinely Pakistani wild-harvest.

Who buys Pakistani specialty botanicals and why

Five buyer types dominate. GCC ittar and attar perfume houses (UAE, Saudi, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait) take frankincense, harmal, alkanet, sandalwood and oud botanical inputs. Regulated pharma (China TCM, Iran where legal, Korea-Vietnam-Japan TCM, Indian Ayurveda re-importers, EU pharmacopoeia houses) takes licorice for glycyrrhizin extraction, ephedra for ephedrine (only against valid import license), guggul for guggulsterone supplementation, harmal for harmaline. Cosmetic and natural-dye takes alkanet root and harmal for traditional red and yellow dyes. Indian-diaspora retail takes alkanet (ratanjot) for the deep-red color of Punjabi karahi gosht. Specialty incense and religious-traditional takes harmal (esfand), frankincense (luban), and guggul for temple incense.

Honest competitive position: China dominates global ephedra and licorice volume; we are the non-China diversification source for buyers building dual-sourcing. India dominates guggul and Boswellia serrata; we ship Boswellia serrata only as transparent re-export. Somalia and Oman dominate frankincense origin; we are a Pakistani-Somali-Omani sorting and re-export route into the GCC. Pakistan and Afghanistan dominate genuine high-altitude sea buckthorn outside Tibet, Mongolia, Russia and EU. We sell what is real and we declare origin per lot.

Frequently asked questions

Buyer questions we field repeatedly across specialty-botanical SKUs. Marked up with FAQPage schema for AI-engine citations.

What is luban frankincense and where is it sourced from in Pakistan?
Luban (Boswellia frankincense resin) is the dried gum-resin tear from Boswellia trees. Pakistan does not natively produce frankincense — Pakistani frankincense exports are largely re-export of Somali Maydi (Boswellia carteri), Omani Hojari (Boswellia sacra) and Indian Boswellia serrata, processed and sorted at our Hyderabad facility for the GCC ittar perfume trade. We are transparent about this — origin is declared per lot on the COA. HS 1301.90.
Is ephedra (ma huang) legal to export?
Ephedra sinica / Ephedra equisetina (ma huang) is regulated. Export to USA, EU, Canada, Australia and Japan is heavily restricted or banned for ephedrine alkaloid content. Legal export channels are China traditional-medicine pharmacy, Iran, Russia/CIS, Korea/Vietnam regulated TCM. We export ephedra only against valid pharma import license from a regulated buyer in a permitted destination. Pakistan is one of two major non-Chinese sources (Pakistan Balochistan + Afghan border + KPK).
What grades of licorice does Pakistan supply?
Three grades. Hand-selected (premium): clean roots, 4-12 mm diameter, glycyrrhizin 4-7 percent, for pharma extraction and Chinese-medicine retail. Powder grade: ground licorice for confectionery, tobacco-flavoring, retail tea blends. Regular grade: mid-tier roots for industrial extraction. Pakistani licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is wild-harvested in central and western Pakistan plus Afghan border. The world centers are China, Türkiye, Iran (sanctioned), Pakistan + Afghanistan, India.
What is harmal (Peganum harmala) used for?
Harmal seeds (Peganum harmala, Syrian rue) are a traditional dye source (yellow/red dye for Persian and Turkmen rugs), an Islamic-tradition incense for evil-eye protection (esfand in Iran, harmal in Pakistan/Afghanistan), and a regulated pharma source for harmaline / harmine alkaloid extraction. Pakistani harmal is sourced from Balochistan and Sindh wild harvest. Export to MENA, Türkiye, Iran (sanctioned), Indian-diaspora, and regulated pharma buyers. HS 1211.90.
What is alkanet root and where is it used?
Alkanet root (Alkanna tinctoria, also Ratanjot in Pakistan/Indian use) is a natural red dye and traditional medicinal root. Used in retail-tier red coloring for Punjabi karahi gosht (the deep-red color of restaurant-style Punjabi mutton curry), wax/cosmetic coloring, traditional skincare oils, and historical fabric dye. HS 1211.90. Sourced from Pakistan northern districts wild harvest plus Afghan-border traders.
What is sea buckthorn and is it Pakistani-grown?
Yes. Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) grows wild in Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, and KPK alpine zones at 2,000-4,000 meters — the same Hippophae salicifolia and Hippophae rhamnoides species commercially harvested in Tibet, Mongolia, Russia and parts of EU. Pakistani sea buckthorn is wild-harvest, not cultivated, and ships as berries (frozen or dried), juice (cold-pressed pulp), and leaves (dried for tea / supplement). High in vitamin C, omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), carotenoids.
What is guggul gum used for?
Guggul (Commiphora wightii / Commiphora mukul) is the dried oleo-gum-resin from the small thorny guggul tree, native to Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and parts of the Arabian peninsula. Used in Ayurvedic medicine for cardiovascular and joint formulations, and as an incense in Indian temple use. Pakistani guggul comes from Sindh and Balochistan wild harvest. Pakistan is a smaller player than India which dominates global commercial guggul. HS 1301.90.
What is the MOQ for specialty botanicals and pricing logic?
MOQ for specialty botanicals is 500 kg per SKU due to wild-harvest supply scarcity, dropping to 1 MT for licorice (more abundant). Pricing varies dramatically with harvest year and grade — frankincense USD 12-45 per kg, ephedra (regulated buyers) USD 8-18 per kg, licorice USD 1.5-4.5 per kg by grade, harmal USD 4-8 per kg, alkanet USD 6-12 per kg, sea buckthorn berries USD 8-22 per kg. Spot quotes valid 14 days max.
Are these botanicals Halal-certified and what compliance for pharma?
Yes. Halal certificate from SANHA / JIC chain on request. Pharma-grade botanicals can be supplied with extra documentation (heavy-metal panel, pesticide MRL, microbial limits to USP/EP monograph, identity confirmation by HPTLC or HPLC). For controlled substances (ephedra), buyers must supply valid import license under their destination country regulations before we book the shipment.
